Vikram Pearce to visit Galle to mark 25th anniversary of Scout Troop
View(s):A series of events to celebrate the life of famed educationist F G Pearce, who founded the First Galle Scout Troop at Mahinda College, will be held from November 20 to 23.
Frederick Gordon Pearce (1892-1962), was former Principal of Mahinda College, Galle from 1921-1923. He founded the first Galle Scout Troop at Mahinda College in June, 1914 while serving as Deputy Principal of the school. He also helped expand the scouting movement to other schools in the Galle District and the Southern Province.
Mr Pearce was instrumental in the founding of two other prominent Buddhist schools in the south; Sanghamitta Balika Vidyalaya, Galle and Rahula College, Matara.
Mr Pearce was also a pioneer in the Indian Public School Movement and established the Blue Mountains School in Ooty, Tamil Nadu in 1961.
His son, Vikram Pearce, Chairman of the F G Pearce Trust, will be in Sri Lanka from November 19 to 24 to attend several events held in honour of his late father. He will take part in events at Sanghamitta College on November 20, Rahula College on November 21 and Mahinda College on November 22.
At Mahinda College, he will be on hand to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the First Galle Scout Troop and the 25th Anniversary of the Mahinda College Old Scouts’ Association. Mr Pearce will also attend an event with Galle Scouts on November 23.
