View(s):By Mahesh de Andrado
The iPhone 16 lineup, launched globally on September 20, 2024, is now available in Sri Lanka through select retailers. This latest lineup introduces updates in processing power, display technology, and camera functionality. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide if it’s worth upgrading to.
A18 chip: Power and efficiency
The iPhone 16 series features Apple’s A18 chip, which delivers improved efficiency and a modest processing power boost. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max versions include a slightly more powerful A18 with an extra GPU core (6 cores vs. 5), enhancing graphics performance. However, the improvements are subtle and may not be highly noticeable in everyday use.
Display enhancements: ProMotion and increased brightness
The standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus maintain a 60Hz refresh rate with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays. In contrast, the Pro models introduce ProMotion technology with a 120Hz refresh rate, providing smoother animations and a 6.9-inch display on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. These Pro models also support HDR10, Dolby Vision, and peak brightness levels up to 2000 nits, making them ideal for bright outdoor conditions. An always-on display feature is also included in the Pro models, allowing quick notifications access without fully waking the screen.
Camera upgrades: Better for enthusiasts
Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus come with a dual-camera setup, including a 48MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide lens with an improved aperture for better low-light shots. The Pro models, however, pack significant camera enhancements. The iPhone 16 Pro offers a 12MP periscope telephoto lens with a 120mm focal length, enabling 5x optical zoom and improved stabilization.
The Pro Max goes a step further, featuring a 48MP ultra-wide lens as opposed to the 12MP ultra-wide lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Both Pro models support advanced photography tools like ProRAW and video options such as 4K120 ProRes and Log video recording, providing professional-level control over video footage.
New camera control button
A new capacitive camera control button, located below the power button on the Pro models, adds a tactile element, allowing users to half-press to lock focus and exposure or fully press to capture shots or shoot video. This feature is designed for users who want more precision, resembling the traditional camera shutter experience.
Battery life and charging options
Apple promises impressive battery life across the iPhone 16 lineup, with the 16 Plus and 16 Pro Max offering up to 105 hours of audio playback. All models support MagSafe wireless charging at 25W, Qi2 wireless charging at 15W, and wired reverse charging at 4.5W.
Design and connectivity
The Pro models have a durable titanium frame, making them more robust without compromising on design. Additionally, they include an upgraded USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2) with speeds up to 10Gbps, and DisplayPort support, enabling users to connect their iPhone directly to external displays via a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, a beneficial feature for professionals on the move.
Should you upgrade?
For users with an iPhone 14 or iPhone 15, the iPhone 16 lineup may not present significant upgrades.
However, if you’re using an older iPhone or considering switching from Android, the iPhone 16’s new camera capabilities, A18 chip, and USB-C connectivity could make the upgrade worthwhile.
