President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will name a 23-member Cabinet tomorrow while holding the portfolios of defence and finance as the beginning of a string of changes to be effected after his party’s spectacular victory in the parliamentary elections on Thursday, the Sunday Times learns.
Harini Amarasuriya will be reappointed as prime minister in the new government, while Minister Vijitha Herath will be sworn in again as foreign minister.
The President will appoint deputy ministers to all ministries, which will see a combination of relevant subjects under respective ministries.
The Sunday Times learns that in addition to the prime minister, another newly elected female parliamentarian from the Southern Province will be included in the Cabinet. The Cabinet is due to hold its first meeting on Tuesday ahead of the first parliamentary session on Thursday.
As part of the changes, the Government is also to change a significant number of ministry secretaries. Among those who are expected to remain in their posts will be Finance Ministry Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena, mainly to continue talks with the IMF.
Meanwhile, names for the appointment for parliamentary positions were under consideration yesterday.
Four names were under consideration for the Speaker’s position, while the Deputy Speaker’s position is to be given to a member of the minority community.
The Sunday Times learns that though national list nominee Bimal Ratnayake’s name was mentioned to be the Speaker, he is now likely to function as the Leader of the House considering his previous experience in Parliament.
