In an all-Sri Lankan final at the ATF Under-16 Girls and Boys Week 1 Tennis Championship, Rehan Gunawardena, a student at Wesley College, emerged as the champion in the boys’ category, defeating Ashlin de Silva of St. Peter’s College, in a thrilling 2-1 victory. The final, held at the SLTA Tennis Courts in Greenpath, Colombo, showcased a fierce contest.

Although Ashlin was the favourite heading into the match, Rehan—a rising star in Sri Lankan tennis—proved his mettle with a determined comeback. After losing the first set, Rehan bounced back with vengeance, claiming the second and third sets to secure the win and the title.

Earlier in the day, Rehan advanced with a 2-0 victory over Methika Wickramasinghe in the semi-final. Methika retired midway through the second set due to injury. Meanwhile, Ashlin triumphed over Bhishman Balaratnarajah in straight sets.

The ATF Under-16 Girls and Boys Week 1 Championship, organised by the Asian Tennis Federation and conducted by Sri Lanka Tennis Association, saw the participation from players across five countries. The ATF Under-16 Girls and Boys Week 2 Championship is set to begin this week.
