SLFUW: A year of providing for those in need
View(s):The Sri Lanka Federation of University Women (SLFUW) organised a special event to commemorate International Children’s and World Elders Day at its headquarters on October 26. It was a well-attended ‘family get-together’ for members and their families, with dance performances, songs and music, games, gifts, breakfast and lunch.
A highlight of the event was handing cash and donations to the Visually Impaired Women Federation and Visually Impaired Children to support them, SLFUW President Colonel Dr Udula Krishnaratne explained. This marked the last event of an activity-packed year for the SLFUW committee, who were involved in many social development work such as:
- Providing scholarships to underprivileged female undergraduates and postgraduates in local universities.
- Providing donations to build a three-dimensional open-air laboratory to Kande Udapanguwa Vidyalaya.
- Providing donations and stationery to underprivileged school children.
- Provision of dry rations and donations to underprivileged families.
- Providing donations to flood victims.
- In memory of SLFUW past presidents and members who have passed away, a lunch was offered to inmates at Paramitha Elders Home, Wanawasala with essential medicines, personal requisites and a cash donations
- Offered alms, pirikara, medicines and cash for medical expenses to bhikkhus of temples in Dewamulla, Thalawa, and Wanawasala.
As the current tenure of the SLFUW executive committee is drawing to a close, the next AGM is scheduled to be held on Saturday, November 23, at 2 pm, at the SLFUW auditorium.
