Progress seen at AASL, BIA renovation
Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd (AASL) is pushing forward with critical development projects and digital innovations to strengthen Sri Lanka’s aviation infrastructure, despite facing a slight dip in profits.
AASL has devised a comprehensive plan to finalise the substructure works left incomplete by a Japanese contractor at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), latest Finance Ministry fiscal performance report revealed.
The remaining work will be handled by a local contractor, utilising AASL funds and overseen by the original project consultant. This completion is essential, given that the BIA has already surpassed its current capacity.
In line with this, AASL has been integrating advanced digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and enhance customer experience.
Self-check-in kiosks, biometric security systems, and AI-driven analytics are now in place, helping streamline airport procedures and bolster security.
Additionally, mobile apps and contactless services have rolled out to provide a safer, more convenient experience for passengers, particularly in the post-pandemic era.
On November 1, AASL signed a critical contract amendment with Japan Airport Consultants, Inc and Nippon Koei Co Ltd, marking a significant step in the BIA Development Project (BIADP) Phase II, Stage 2, the Aviation Ministry announced.
This project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will focus on completing the passenger terminal and associated works. AASL is already in the procurement process to begin construction on these essential facilities.
Despite these ambitious projects, AASL’s financial performance in the first half of 2024 has shown a decline. The company reported total revenue of Rs. 20,823 million, with aeronautical revenue of Rs. 3,924 million and non-aeronautical revenue of Rs. 16,824 million.
However, AASL’s profit before tax decreased by 13 per cent to Rs. 17,324 million, compared to Rs. 19,885 million during the same period in 2023., the finance ministry report observed.
The decline in profit is largely attributed to higher personnel expenses, which increased due to salary adjustments for air traffic controllers and other staff, it added.
While profits have been impacted, AASL remains focused on its vision for growth, sustainability, and enhanced airport services, signalling strong progress for the future of Sri Lanka’s aviation sector.
