Singapore’s first low-cost carrier, Jetstar Asia launched its inaugural direct flight to Colombo from Singapore last Thursday. During a media briefing held at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo, Jetstar Asia, CEO, John Simeone highlighted that regional connectivity is growing and more people are opting for budget travel globally.

Mr. Simeone said, “For Jetstar Asia, the Singapore-Colombo route has been on the cards since 2019 and it has become a reality today. The launch of the direct flight between the two countries will boost regional connectivity and help grow tourism. As travellers from diverse markets will take this route, especially budget travellers, we want to give more choice to the people. This connectivity will change the aviation landscape as a significant number of passengers transfer through Singapore Changi Airport to Australia and the West. All of us have the desire to travel and Jetstar offers more convenient and affordable options while the carrier focuses mainly on safety.”

He also mentioned that Jetstar Asia’s pricing offers significant savings compared to other airlines on the route. “We have sold over two-thirds of our fares for under US$100 in the last financial year and we are committed to continuing this trend. This move will help to boost tourism, while supporting local businesses and providing travellers from Sri Lanka and across Southeast Asia with access to more affordable travel options.”

“The route is expected to drive demand not only from leisure travellers but also from budget-conscious business passengers. We are seeing more travellers opt for affordable alternatives and our network offers great flexibility with options to explore Southeast Asia and beyond. The timing for this new service is perfect with Christmas holidays ahead,” he added.

Hayleys Advantis has been appointed the General Sales Agent for Jetstar Asia in Sri Lanka. Hayleys Advantis, Deputy Managing Director, Shano Sabar during the media briefing noted that Singapore remains a preferred destination for Sri Lankans due to its proximity, ease of travel and range of attractions.

Jetstar Asia will operate five return flights each week on Airbus A320s. The new route offers travellers a choice of morning or evening departures, providing convenient options for those connecting through Singapore. Over 90,000 low fare seats will be available each year, giving Singaporeans and travellers from across the region another exciting travel destination while bringing thousands of tourists and business travellers to Sri Lanka.
