QUT students gain industry experience

Crafting business strategies for real clients, designing mobile apps, interning with Cisco, Deloitte and BMW, building machine-learning programmes, designing public spaces and more: these are just some of the industry-linked projects that international students at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) have completed as part of their studies.

Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and Bachelor of Communication graduate, Ivey, says, “QUT has forged partnerships with local businesses and organisations, giving students like me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and apply our skills in the real world. I’ve had the chance to work on projects for real clients, which has not only helped me build my portfolio but also given me a taste of what it’s like to work in the industry.”

Ivey completed an internship during her degree, gained work experience in media and communication at QUT and now works as a marketing coordinator at a company in Brisbane. “Attending QUT workshops on resume writing and interview skills, as well as networking events, has allowed me to connect with successful professionals in my field and learn from their experiences,” she says.

Thanks to the dedicated Career Development and Employability Team that offers career support and resources to students, QUT won the 2024 Award for Outstanding Careers Service from the Australian Association of Graduate Employers industry awards (AGRIAs).

QUT is the first university in Australia to achieve triple international accreditation for their business school, earning them a reputation of quality and connections to global industry icons. Work-integrated learning is built into courses, and students can connect with industry through internships, showcases and networking events hosted by QUT.

Master of Business graduate Jaspreet (Jess) designed a business proposal for the Brisbane-based social enterprise Food Connect during her degree, and then secured a paid internship with the organisation. She also worked on a collaborative industry project to create a marketing proposal and strategy that the students pitched to the Australian insurance company RACQ.

Alongside industry partnerships, QUT is well-connected to tertiary institutions around the world. If studying business in Australia is your goal, you could complete a Higher National Diploma in Business Management with our partner institution ICBT (International College of Business and Technology) and enter the second year of QUT’s Bachelor of Business. QUT also supports several other undergraduate pathways from Sri Lankan tertiary institutions SLIIT, NIBM and ANC into QUT courses, as well as joint PhD programmes with the University of Peradeniya, the University of Colombo, and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

QUT study areas include architecture and built environment, business, communication, creative arts, design, engineering, health, information technology and games, justice, law, mathematics and data science, project management, science, teaching and education, and English language and pathway programmes.

QUT campuses are home to QUT Foundry, an entrepreneurship hub that supports, connects and funds students to launch their business ideas. In 2023, QUT won the Entrepreneurial University of the Year in the Asia-Pacific Region (Triple E Awards).

QUT’s vibrant student clubs often help students get a head start in their career by networking, participating in global competitions and working on impactful projects. Engineering and project management student Anuj attended networking event organised by the student club 180Degrees Consulting QUT, in collaboration with Deloitte. “At this event, we engaged with Deloitte employees and the Director who showed us how management tools are used through real-life examples,” Anuj explains. “This experience underscored the significance of networking and its practical relevance in our lives.”

Drashti, a Master of Information Technology graduate, secured two different internships with established companies in Brisbane that formed part of her research and final project. “I was able to secure an internship aligned with my major, where I worked on a hands-on task in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning,” she says. “For my final project, I developed a predictive model using machine learning tools and techniques, including time series data analysis, to support the company in managing its clients’ budgets.”

The world changes rapidly, and at QUT, students do more than just adapt. With practical skills, confidence and industry connections, they shape the future.
