Moves to mark Maveerar Day on Wednesday in North and East
View(s):Preparations are underway by war-affected families and youth groups to observe the annual Maveerar Naal—Martyrs Day—next Wednesday (November 27) across abandoned cemeteries in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
In Jaffna, arrangements are in place near the Thileepan memorial at Nallur to commemorate the event where the lists of those who died are displayed.
Declared by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the war period to commemorate its fallen cadres and civilians, the day is observed by locals to remember their loved ones who died in the war.
Residents are also seen engaging in Shramadana campaigns in the abandoned cemeteries in Jaffna, Mullaithivu, Kilinochchi, Batticaloa, Ampara, and Mannar to hold commemoration events.
Meanwhile, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna sources said the party conducted an internal commemoration for JVP founder Rohana Wijeweera to mark his death anniversary on November 13, as public gatherings were prohibited on the day due to it falling under the quiet period ahead of the general election.
