MPs to be given lessons on social media ethics during orientation programme
View(s):Parliament officials are expected to emphasise that video recording inside the chamber during Parliamentary sessions, going live on social media, and sharing videos taken during Parliament sessions on social media are prohibited when newly elected MPs take part in a three-day orientation workshop starting tomorrow (25).
Former Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena had given a ruling under Standing Order 146 during the previous Parliament prohibiting MPs from engaging in such conduct that disrupts sessions.
The three-day orientation programme for new MPs will be held from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on November 25, 26 and 27.
The orientation programme aims to educate MPs on their roles and responsibilities, parliamentary privileges, the legislative process, committee procedures, Standing Orders of Parliament, and constitutional provisions. The programme also includes a practical session on the use of the electronic voting system.
MPs are also expected to be briefed on laws and procedures related to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, as well as functions of the Parliamentary Affairs Division under the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.
Heads of departments within Parliament will also provide an overview of their respective functions.
