Student killed in barrel explosion in garage
View(s):A student was killed after he was hit by the lid of a barrel that was blown off due to internal pressure, a Magisterial inquiry in Hambantota was told.
Sixteen year old R.G.S.Sithumini had visited his friends at a garage where spray painting work is carried out in Angunukolapelessa, where
the incident occurred.
The barrel had suddenly exploded and the lid had blown off hitting the student on his neck while four other friends too were injured.
The OIC of the Angunukolapelessa police, H.P.A. Pushpakumara said that the barrel which earlier contained thinner had been closed for nearly nine months and he believes that it exploded as there was a build of gas inside the closed barrel.
The workers in the garage had regularly climbed onto the barrel and used it as an elevation to carryout their spray painting work resulting in the lid getting tightened. The contents have been handed over to the Government Analyst for a further inquiry.
The Magistrate Oshada Mahaarachchi conducted the Magisterial inquriy while Chief JMO of the Hambantota hospital Dr N.G. Nisansala Lakmali conducted the postmortem. Police Sergeant K.S.Piyaratna of the Angunukolapelessa Police assisted in the inquiry.
