After completing your G.C.E. Advanced Level examination, you may be interested in joining a business organisation.In my humble opinion, you should have a “ burning desire” to succeed in work and Life.
In life and the business world, changes are constant. Access to higher education locally and globally, a higher literacy rate, superior technological advancements, and globalisation have made drastic changes in Job markets and the business world. Gone are the days when one remained in a clerical or junior staff position until one retired from work.
Job opportunities and job markets have evolved at a supersonic pace since the beginning of this Millennium. However, the economic, political, and social crises have brought them to a grinding halt.
CHANGING ROLES OF MODERN LEADER
Nothing is forever.These crises could be overcome when the leaders change their roles from mere administrators to becoming true leaders. Furthermore, the “manager roles” played in the business organisations have become obsolete. Hence, you need to keep abreast of the changes that are taking place locally and globally.
“A leader is a person who influences a group of people or nation towards achieving a goal. A mnemonic for this definition would be the 3P’s – Person, people and purpose.
A “L-E-A-D-E-R”, has to Lead by example, be enthustiastic, achiever, be decisive,encourage team members and be ready to learn and teach. To carry out these functions in business organisations he or she needs to be an effective communicator. You have to be an excellent interpersonal communicator.A leader has to be bold, charismatic, self-confident, a team player, caring and sharing, honest, diligent, empathetic, transparent in dealings and manage time wisely and be considerate to his or her fellow members. Some of them are born leaders and others are made as leaders.
ACHIEVING SELF MASTERY
In my humble opinion, the hallmark of a true leader is achieving “self-mastery”.
When working, should success follow the endeavours, it has to be considered as a “Win” and if not it has to be considered as a “Gain”. In other words, a lesson learned and experience gained for future success.Your motto in life has to be, “Be Prepared & think and Act now”. Your policy in life is to have a “growth mindset”. You should always focus on “Continuous Improvement and Self Development”. You have to follow the cardinal rules during your work life. Those are Responsibility, Respect and Obedience, which are considered as the Triangle of employee duties. Your prime objective needs to be “Learning and Growing”.
REQUIREMENTS TO BE A DYNAMIC AND EFFECTIVE LEADER
As future leaders, you should further improve and develop the following qualities; accountability,confidence,integrity,humility, resilience, influence, positivity, and active listening.To strive for work excellence, you should accumulate the art and skills of delegation, decision-making,team building, Entrepreneurial skills, ability to motivate and inspire team members, responsibility and dependability, strategic and critical thinking, open-mindedness, problem-solving skills, empowerment, authenticity and self-awareness.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME MANAGEMENT
Time Management is vital for your success in the future.Never say that you do not have sufficient time. Let me prove that you have enough time.We may expect that on average, one may live up to a minimum of 70-75 years. If you are 20 years old, you have 1,734,480,000 seconds ahead of you.
( 75-20=55years × 365 days × 24 hours × 60 minutes × 60 seconds).Now, let me know, whether you have sufficient time or not.
PLANS ARE NOTHING AND PLANNING IS EVERYTHING
My other question is what are you going to do during that period?I strongly recommend you have a “Vision and Mission statement” for your career and life. Your Parents, Elders,Mentors and superiors could guide you to make such a statement.Ask yourself the following questions right now; Where am I in my career and life now?Where do I want to go in life? How do I get there? What period should I take to reach that particular position? What resources do I need? Who could help me? What are the contingency plans? What will I do after reaching that desired position? You should have a vibrant plan coupled with goals and objectives. Most importantly “Planning is vital for your success”. “Plans are nothing and Planning is everything”.
In marching towards victory as a leader you need to have implicit faith in yourself, your destiny and God.
CONCLUSION
I hope that you have realised the values and importance of being a “true leader” to serve your school, organisation, society and Motherland. Hence, you need to change your managerial role to become a resolute,dynamic, vibrant,astute and resilient leader.Strive to lead a productive and prosperous life.Always strive for excellence.
In order to achieve your company goals and objectives you need passion, purpose,painstaking precision and direction.Most importantly,in this challenging business world, you need to be a resolute and resilient leader.Ultimately, you should be able to translate your company vision into reality.
