To kick off the annual Colloquium Series 2024/25 conducted by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, Prof. Prabodhika R. Mallikaratchy, a distinguished Medical Professor at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Medicine and a proud alumna of the College of Chemical Sciences, shared groundbreaking insights from her pioneering work on functional nucleic acid materials. Her research focuses on nucleic acid aptamers—specialised ligands designed to regulate cellular responses with unparalleled precision.

For over 50 years, scientists have been unraveling the mysteries of cellular transformation, exploring how cells respond to environmental cues by undergoing molecular-level structural changes. At the heart of this research are membrane receptor proteins—highly sensitive molecules that mediate these changes and are critical to understanding cellular processes.

Central to Prof. Mallikaratchy’s presentation was the Ligand Guided Selection (LIGS) platform, a revolutionary tool developed by her lab. This innovative technique identifies aptamers capable of targeting cell surface receptors in their functional states. These aptamers hold the potential to be developed into stable biochemical tools or devices, offering more effective control of ligand-receptor interactions than current methods. This advancement is poised to transform receptor biology studies and facilitate novel material development.

The event began with a fellowship and was followed by the colloquium on November 28th, 2024, at the PPGL Siriwardena Auditorium of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. The attendees included the Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences, Prof. Chandani Perera, along with several internal academics and enthusiastic undergraduates.
