Dambulla Economic Centre sees drop in supplies due to bad weather

Due to prevailing adverse weather conditions, the Dambulla Economic Centre is experiencing a significant reduction in the supply of vegetables, with deliveries falling by 60 percent.
As a result, there has been a noticeable decrease in the number of traders arriving to purchase vegetables, the Economic Centre Traders Association says.
Dambulla Economic Centre Traders Association Secretary I G Wijenanda attributed the drop to the lack of quality in vegetables brought to the centre. The rain-affected produce goes unsold.
Consequently, the quantity of vegetables arriving from other provinces and rural areas has decreased. With the rains disrupting the harvest, wholesale prices of carrots and leeks are expected to gradually increase between 100 and 140 rupees a kilogram, Mr Wijenanda said. He added that vegetables cultivated in lowland areas were also becoming scarce.
At present, a kilogram of beans is sold between 400 and 420 rupees, while carrots and leeks are priced between 130 and 140 rupees. Pumpkins sell at 100 rupees per kilogram, and green chillies are priced at 250 rupees.
The lack of vendors has resulted in the centre taking on a somewhat deserted appearance these days.
