Fatal joy ride in Negombo lagoon claims father and daughter

Two people, a father and a daughter, were killed in an accident when an overloaded canoe capsized in Munnakkarai, part of the Negombo lagoon, last Sunday.

A group of seven was loaded onto a canoe that could only hold three, the police said, and were being taken on a joy ride through the mangroves, despite warnings against adverse weather conditions.
While five commuters were rescued, a father and a daughter, Ranil (50) and Nethmi (19) Fernando were killed and their bodies recovered on Monday.
Before succumbing one of the deceased, Nethmi, had managed to hand over a five-year old girl in the canoe to safety.
Negombo Acting Magisrate Indika Silva held the inquiry and ordered the police to conduct the post mortem to be held by the Negombo Judicial Medical Officer.
