Husband and wife electrocuted, daughter escapes death

View(s):

A couple was electrocuted at Mundalama in Puttalam, and their daughter narrowly escaped death this week, police said.

The victims were identified as S.A.S. Stanley Thilakaratne (54) and S.A. Chandrika Malkanti (53), both landowners and proprietors of a carwash centre.

The incident occurred when the husband, after returning home from the carwash centre, went to connect a motor to a switch mounted on a wooden structure in front of the house. He was then electrocuted, letting out a scream that prompted his wife to rush to his aid. In her attempt to save him, she was also electrocuted.

Unsafe wiring is blamed for the couple's death. Right: Their daughter, who narrowly escaped electrocution

As the couple struggled with the electric shock, their daughter tried to help them but was thrown back due to the shock. She fell to the ground and escaped death.

According to the police, the accident was a result of the installation being carried out without proper safety measures, and the wires used were found to be damaged in several places and taped. The victims were rushed to Mundalama District Hospital by locals, but despite their efforts, the husband-and-wife duo were pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled at the Puttalam Base Hospital, and the Mundalama Police are continuing investigations.
