Two fishing vessels detected with over 500 kgs of narcotics in the Arabian Sea is due to be brought to the Colombo habour by Monday, Navy Spokesman Captain Gayan Wickramasooriya said yesterday.

The Indian Navy assisted the Sri Lanka Navy in intercepting and seizing vessels.

The operation which unfolded over two days, was a direct response to information provided by the SL Navy regarding suspected narcotics smuggling by Sri Lankan-flagged fishing vessels in the Arabian Sea.

Following the tip-off, the Indian Navy swiftly mobilised its resources to localise and intercept the vessels. Extensive surveillance was conducted using Indian Naval Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft, coordinated through the Information Fusion Centre (Indian Ocean Region) based in Gurugram. An Indian Naval ship was also deployed to provide on-ground support for the operation.

On November 24 and 25, the Indian Navy successfully identified two vessels through continuous aerial surveillance and coordination with the Sri Lankan Navy. During the operation, approximately 500kg of crystal methamphetamine was seized from the vessels.
