Last-minute tax rush cripples IRD systems as deadline ends

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) experienced a last-minute rush of people trying to file their tax returns before the November 30 deadline last night.

A senior IRD official said that at one point yesterday, 16,000 persons had logged in and were

trying to file their returns. Some taxpayers had found the underpowered computers unable to cope with concurrent transactions.

Many complained that the system had crashed after making several attempts, thereby forcing them to restart the filing process, but they were not successful.

There were also several others who were not in a position to access the online system, as their areas, especially in the North and East, were affected by flooding, with some areas not having power supplies.

The IRD had made filing of income returns to be done mandatorily online. Special permission to file manually had to be done by making an appeal to the Commissioner-General.

The system to file returns had been open from October 1, thereby giving sufficient time to file the returns, the IRD official said. Those who file their returns after the deadline could be liable to a penalty.

There was no confirmation from the IRD last night if an extension was to be granted due to the inability of thousands to file their returns on time due to the computer overload and the flood situation.
