Maveerar Naal events pass off peacefully

The annual Maveerar Naal, or Heroes’ Day, to commemorate the war dead, was marked peacefully across the Northern and Eastern provinces this week despite the bad weather that prevailed in the two provinces.

Decorated with red and yellow flags, the cemeteries that were designated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as Maveerar Thuyilum Illams (martyrs cemeteries), where fallen cadres were buried, drew mourners who participated in a collective commemoration event peacefully on Friday (27).

Earlier the government announced that people could remember their war dead but warned that they would not be allowed to remember any terrorist organisations or their symbols at any event.

Unlike in the past, when police secured court orders to prevent such mass gatherings, the security authorities did not seek such orders but were very vigilant about the ground-level developments.

T. Sellathurai and his wife turned up at the event in Kodikaamam, Jaffna, to commemorate the deaths of two of their sons, whose remains were buried in the one-time cemetery—now a military base.

The symbolic event was organised on a private plot of land opposite the military base.

“We just want to remember our sons, and we came with their favourite food for prayers.”

Youth arrested on Maveerar day

A 29 year old youth from Inuvil, Jaffna was taken into police custody under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) this week.
The youth was arrested by Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) officers in connection with the messages he had shared on social media during Maveerar day events this week.
