Vasu’s DLF says proud over 50,000 votes it got
View(s):The Democratic Left Front (DLF) states that it contested 14 districts, including the north and east, alone at the 2024 general election and garnered a “respectable” 50,836 votes.
A statement issued by DLF Leader and former parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara noted that the party’s candidates were exclusively area leaders of the constituencies. He said the party is proud to announce that the DLF collected an average of 5,000 votes from each constituency. The Kandy District stood out with 8,545 votes.
The party expressed confidence that it could secure a few candidates as councillors in local councils, if not in provincial councils. The DLF contested the election independently, without any alliances. “The party stood alone,” the statement pointed out.
The party claimed it maintained a position of cooperation with the National People’s Power (NPP), stating that while it did not criticise the NPP from its platforms or campaign materials, it was committed to supporting the group. The party said that its primary aim is to build a Left Populist Government that prioritises growth and welfare, with a particular focus on agriculture.
The DLF expressed concern about the conditions imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), calling on the
NPP to mobilise the people to resist and revise these conditions. “The massive mandate received will probably act as a buffer to the IMF’s strong-arm tactics,” the party said.
Reflecting on the political landscape, the DLF criticised the previous government, “led by Ranil Wickremesinghe and supported by Mahinda Rajapaksa,” and said the 2024 general election also “pronounces the end of the middle path parties and such political strategy.”
The DLF expressed its support for the current administration’s pledges on critical issues. “We welcome the pledges given by the president and the new government regarding the most burning issues. We will also support the efforts of the government,” the party stated.
