Dilruwan changes role from selector to coach
Dilruwan Perera has resigned from his role as a national cricket selector to focus on a career in coaching. The former Sri Lanka spinner was part of the current five-member selection committee, headed by Upul Tharanga, but has decided to step down to pursue his passion for coaching.
Following his resignation, Perera was appointed head coach of the Sri Lanka Under-19 team for the ongoing ACC U-19 Asia Cup in Dubai, although Sri Lanka Cricket clarified that this is a temporary appointment.
“He has joined the High Performance Centre as a bowling coach and will continue to work in that capacity,” explained Ashley de Silva.
“All training at the U-19 level will be conducted by the High Performance Centre, and whenever they are competing internationally, we will appoint a coach on a tour-by-tour basis.”
The 42-year-old Perera played 43 Tests for Sri Lanka, taking 161 wickets.
De Silva also confirmed that no replacement will be made for Perera’s vacancy in the selection committee. As a result, the committee will now consist of four members, including Tharanga, Ajantha Mendis, Indika de Saram and Tharanga Paranavitana.
