Bust of Dr C R Panabokke unveiled for World Soil Day

The Soil Science Society of Sri Lanka celebrated ‘World Soil Day’ on Thursday, by unveiling a bust of Deshmanaya Vidyajothi Dr C R Panabokke – a pioneer in soil science at the National Media Centre of the Department of Agriculture.
Himadiri Panabokke, daughter of Dr Panabokke, unveiled the bust.
In a commemorative address attended by the members of the Soil Society and other invitees including former Director of Agriculture Dr Jerry Jayawardena, the Deputy Director of Agriculture Dr H B Nayakekorala said that Dr Panabokke had spent over 60 years of active service, of which 32 years in government service as a researcher and administrator, another 30 years in national and international organisations as a researcher, consultant and an
advisor.
He had published 91 documents and could trace nearly 60 of them.
He said that it was Dr Ernest Abeyratne, Head of the Research and development of Mahaillupallama who proposed to Dr Panabokke to support the soil and water management research programme which Dr Abeyratne commenced. From there Dr Panabokke reached the utmost and became the first soil science researcher.
