A signature production that spans its campuses in Colombo, Kandy, Negombo, Dehiwala, and Ratmalana, Applause 26 showcases the creativity and commitment of over 350 talented students.
Directed by the renowned Kala Keerthi Jerome de Silva, this year’s edition explores the power of storytelling through the lens of the alphabet, weaving together elements of music, drama, rhythm, and rhyme in English, Sinhala, and Tamil. It promises a spectacle that celebrates not only talent but also cultural diversity and collaboration.
Negombo: Channeling Enthusiasm
Negombo’s contributions shine with performances that blend youthful exuberance and emotional depth. From the lively Oye Ojaye to the poignant narratives of Dear Evan Hansen and the high-energy vibes of High School Musical, the students exemplify the power of teamwork.
Year 11 performer Vinhara Saputhanthri shared, “Playing diverse roles—from a cheerleader to Lady Macbeth—pushed me beyond my comfort zone and helped me grow as an individual and performer.”
Kandy: Harmony in Motion
Gateway College Kandy promises an emotional and energetic showcase, featuring 82 students in six remarkable acts. Highlights include the electrifying Naatu Naatu, the heartfelt Seasons of Love, and a mesmerising finale with Xanadu.
For Year 10 student Ravindu Dissanayake, mastering the intricate choreography of Naatu Naatu was a defining moment:
“The rehearsals were tough, but seeing our efforts come alive on stage makes it all worthwhile.”
Ratmalana: A Cinematic Twist
Ratmalana’s imaginative approach transforms the stage into a cinematic set with performances such as Ganga Addara and Gedara Hitiya Rosa. Their second act, Un Poco Loco, blends Sri Lankan beats with global influences, leaving audiences energised and inspired.
Year 7 drummer Sethun Perera summed it up:
“Being part of Applause for the first time has been thrilling. Performing on such a big stage is an unforgettable experience.”
Dehiwala: A Showcase of Versatility
Gateway College Dehiwala brings a vibrant mix of drama and music with renditions of Avenue Q and Yentl. The students’ performances reflect their passion and meticulous preparation, creating a memorable impact.
For Year 12 student Ravisha Attygalle, this production offered a new challenge:
“Singing, dancing, and acting together has been such a unique experience. It’s about more than performance; it’s about harmony and unity.”
Colombo: Setting the Stage for Spectacle
With over 100 students, Gateway College Colombo is primed to steal the show with an eclectic mix of contemporary and classic performances, including beloved hits like Cats and Prince of Egypt.
Year 13 student Pahandi Silva reflected on the experience:
“This production has been a journey of growth, friendship, and unforgettable memories. Being part of Applause has been a highlight of my school years.”
A Grand Collaboration
Beyond the individual brilliance of each school, Applause 26 celebrates the collective spirit of the Gateway family. With Springfield College Nugegoda adding their flair, collaborative performances of Applause and Zorba the Greek bookend this vibrant showcase, emphasising the power of unity.
