Chinese funded digitalisation programme in January
View(s):The Chinese funded digitalisation of the education system programme is expected to get off the ground in January.
The Chinese Government is providing a grant of US$ 20 million to introduce digitalisation programmes in some 3,000 schools selected from various provinces.
The groundwork for the programme was set by former Education Minister Susil Premajayantha during his visit to China.
Under the programme, the Education Ministry will be able to transmit lessons or lectures to 1,500 schools simultaneously, thereby overcoming the teacher shortage issue.
The facility for a school to transmit their lessons to 10 other schools in the vicinity will also be available.
Cameras, smartboards, wifi equipment, and other technical equipment would be provided. The equipment will have a 3-year guarantee, while spare parts would be provided under a guarantee for 5 years.
Some 700 teachers have already been trained to undertake any repairs of the systems.
The background for the project was set during the visit of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to China in Ocotber 2023.
A joint statement issued during the visit said that the two sides agreed to sign a Letter of Exchange of Feasibility Study on China – Aid Project of Digital Transformation for the General Education in Sri Lanka. -DWI
