Concert by physically impaired performers at Peradeniya University
View(s):A disability concert was held in Peradeniya University on November 3, by 34 special needs performers from the Arts Faculty.
The performances displayed the skills of the performers, some of whom were visually impaired and some had a walking disability.
“At the event we try to prove that disability is not a disability, and in consequence change the attitude of the people,” Senior Lecturer Dr Nimal Wijesiri said.
He added that the concert centered on how to apply critical disability theory to Lankan theatre, and change the term ‘aabaditha’ to ‘badasahitha’, where the first term resulted in marginalisation.
Two of the artistes were of special note: Rasika Dissanayake, who was the lead singer and Chanka Sampath, a graduate of Peradeniya.
Rasika Dissanayake had a flesh-eating disease and was in a wheel chair, while Chanka Sampath became visually impaired at 5-years old and could still remember colours and letters.
Dr Wiijesiri said the event was considered a success and was a first such event at the University.
The audience of around 200 consisted of academic and non-academic staff as well as students. (PW)
