Stationery allowance for schoolchildren
View(s):The Cabinet has decided to provide an allowance for schoolchildren from selected families belonging to low income groups to purchase stationery.
The move came after the Census Department revealed that over 55 per cent of schoolchildren had a significant negative impact due to the adverse effects of the economic crisis.
The survey found that the percentage of students facing this issue are higher in rural and estate areas where 53.2 percent are affected, and children have reduced or stopped purchasing school stationery, while 26.1 percent of schoolchildren reuse school stationery. The Cabinet paper was submitted by President Anura Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. An allowance of Rs 6,000 per child will be made through the Welfare Benefits Board to purchase stationery for children of families entitled to the Aswesuma scheme.
In addition, this allowance will also be provided to children from families with a disabled parent, all children of school age in orphanages, and children belonging to categories who have become destitute due to special reasons. -KW
