The Dawson Tower, built in memory of Captain William Francis Dawson, the architect of the Kandy-Colombo Road, is being given a facelift after a number of years.
The Tower was erected by those of Dawson’s regiment after his death, as he could not see his own work completed, dying under strange circumstances in March 1832.
The building of the Kandy-Colombo Road across difficult terrain was ordered by Governor Sir Edward Barnes. Captain Dawson was ordered to build this road, which took seven years.
The tower, a protected monument under the Antiquities Ordinance coming under the Archaeological Department, lies at the head of the Kadugannawa pass.
