Festive shoppers seem less eager to deck the halls

The annual buzz of the vibrant Christmas season at Pettah’s shops selling décor, seems to have quietened down this year. While some still wander through the narrow lanes eyeing Christmas trees, festive ornaments, and strings of colourful lights, the festive atmosphere feels notably subdued.
The Sunday Times observed a drop in crowds as well as supplies. Shopkeepers said customers appear less eager to purchase holiday décor with just two weeks to Christmas.
M Chandrabose, a salesman at the People’s Park Complex in Pettah, commenting on the prices said, “A streamer that used to sell for Rs 150 last year is now being sold at Rs 130, and prices of other ornaments have dropped too,” he said. “But, there is still a shortage of customers. It’s been a quieter season than usual.’’
Shoppers like Ms Swarnalatha from Piliyandala remain generally satisfied with the situation. “The prices are more than satisfactory,” she said smiling, her newly purchased décor in hand.
Likewise, Anthony Tiron and K Anoma from Negombo, shared their contentment. “We are happy with the price reductions,” they said.
Though the crowds were fewer, those who did wander the markets and the streets of Pettah, were seen spreading the joy of Christmas with some shoppers even on video calls with loved ones, sharing glimpses of the décor and seeking their opinions.
In areas that predominantly celebrate Christmas, such as Negombo and Wattala little appears to have changed with residents saying, “it feels just like any other ordinary day,” with the festive spirit blending into the usual rhythm of daily life.
Sister Gertrude Fernando from St. Mary’s Convent in Balangoda reflected on the deeper significance of the holiday season. “Christmas is a cultural event for us, not just a contemporary idea of commercialism. It’s about kindness, compassion, and spreading meaningful joy of the birth of Jesus Christ. This is a great opportunity for us to remind people of it,’’ she said.
Meanwhile, the Public Health Inspectors (PHI) Union is set to deploy 2,000 PHIs for raids targeting eateries during the festive season, ensuring that health and safety regulations are adhered to.
