Met Dept, warns of another low pressure area building over southeast Bay of Bengal
View(s):A low pressure area that has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal is to intensify further and move northwestwards during the next few days, the Meteorology Department said.
Issuing an advisory for heavy rains, strong winds and rough seas, the department added that the low pressure is likely to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka – Tamil Nadu coast around Wednesday December 11.
Metrology Department Director General Athula Karunanayake told the Sunday Times that the department had made observations that the low pressure system would be heading off Sri Lanka towards Tamil Nadu during the upcoming days.
He explained that according to the current information from tomorrow night onwards indirect effects could be expected inland with cloudy skies, occasional showers and thunder showers in the North, North Central, and the East and Uwa provinces.
He added that showers and thundershowers could also be expected in other areas in the afternoon and evening hours.
“It is too early to predict the strength of the rain and wind affecting the land area. However the general public are requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers,” he said.
Mr Karunanayake added that the shallow and deep sea areas towards east of Sri Lanka would be rough and the fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department.
Meanwhile the Disaster Management Center too has held several zoom meetings involving all stakeholders including, the Meteorology and Irrigation departments to prepare for the developing weather situation.
The Disaster Management Center, Director General Retired Major General Udaya Herath told the Sunday Times that they have called for a meeting following the weather advisory.
He said he has requested the Meteorology Department to provide situation reports swiftly and accurately within the 24 hours period so that relevant stakeholders such as the Irrigation Department could make decisions to manage the adverse weather situations. He added that DMC would carry out coordinating activities between the stakeholders.
