Young Joe cagers emerge victorious at Bens Mini Tourney
View(s):Young cagers from St. Joseph’s College won the Mini Basketball Tournament for Primary Children of the Under-11 age group, organised by St. Benedict’s College, defeating St. Peter’s College at Kotahena.
In a close battle between young Josephians and Peterites where both teams were locked at 4-all at half time, the excitement towards the end at the game ended in a thrilling draw at 8-all. However the Joes scored during extra time to claim the victory by 10-8 and clinch the Bens Mini Basketball title. Risitha de Livera and Dave de Zilva from St. Joseph’s were awarded the Most Valuable Player and the Best Offensive Player respectively.
Organised by the Basketball Wing of the St. Benedict’s College, the event was graced by Old Ben Saman Upasena, a former basketball player who represented his alma mater and an entrepreneur, along with Bro. Pubudu Rajapakshe, the Director of St. Benedict’s College, Bro. Praveen Vaas, the Sub Director of the
St. Benedict’s Primary section and Bro. Jayakanthan, the Principal of De La Salle College, Mutwal.
Played at the St. Benedict’s College courts in Kotahena, this tournament was sponsored by Atlas Axillia, manufacturers and marketers of Sunflower yellow pencils. Six schools, namely St. Benedict’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Peter’s and De La Salle, participated at the boys category while Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena and Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya competed in the girls category. Good Shepherd Convent won the girls title.
