Traditionally recognised in the fields of agriculture and tourism, Sri Lanka has often been overlooked as a hub for technological innovation. Twinery, the innovation arm of global apparel tech leader MAS Holdings, is redefining this narrative as it recently announced the granting of its 100th utility patent.

As a leading innovation powerhouse in Sri Lanka, Twinery brings together scientists, engineers, designers, and entrepreneurs to transform the human-textile interface. Through visionary thinking and collaboration, Twinery has turned groundbreaking ideas into tangible solutions, developing 23 disruptive technologies across Material Science, Chemistry, Electronics, Thermodynamics, and Textile Engineering – reshaping the future of fashion and beyond, the company said in a media release.

“From filing our first international patent in 2011, to being granted 100 patents in just 13 years is an achievement we’re incredibly proud of,” says MAS Holdings Chief Innovation Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Ranil Vitarana. “This milestone is a testament to the passion and hard work of our team as well as the countless hours of research and collaboration that have driven us to the forefront of global textile innovation.”

Twinery’s journey demonstrates the power of homegrown talent to create world-class technologies, positioning Sri Lanka as a rising force in the fields of technology, apparel, and science. These patents—spanning 23 original innovations and granted across more than 20 regions, including the USA, Europe, Japan, and India—are more than just technological achievements. They represent a pathway to economic growth, sustainability, and the elevation of Sri Lanka as a global innovation leader.

“MAS is bringing Sri Lanka to the forefront of global technological innovation, and we hope this milestone inspires a new generation to pursue science and technology,” said National Innovation Agency, Chief Innovation Officer, Prof. Ajith de Alwis.
