The low pressure condition brewing in the Bay of Bengal has now weakened, the Department of Meteorology said.

This is the second time that the country has experienced a period of heavy rainfall, particularly in the northeast following the impact of cyclone Fengal last month which also claimed lives across the country.

Due to the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, rainfall has been heavy in the northeast of Sri Lanka and the Met Department has advised against setting out to sea for fishing.

Predictions are that showers or thundershowers will occur at times particularly in the Northern, North-central and Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, fairly heavy showers of about 75mm are likely at some places in Uva province.

Misty conditions can be expected in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva provinces during the morning.

Due to the adverse weather in the North and North Eastern areas, infrastructure, homes, animals, and agricultural lands have been damaged.

Farmer associations said vegetable production has dropped.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, president of the farmers association in Vavuniya said many reservoirs were damaged, but not like paddy fields in Mullaitivu. In Vavuniya paddy cultivation suffered the most. At least 50,000 hectares of paddy cultivation were destroyed. Most of the cultivations were two weeks old.

“Ultimately, with the current weather warning issues this time the authorities from the disaster management centre have placed remedies to overcome any disaster situations. They are vigilant in such situations.

“Reservoirs were also destroyed due to the heavy rainfall. Our undu, mung bean cultivation, and black eyed peas cultivations were also damaged. Some buffaloes and cows also died owing to the flooding,” he said.
