It was on a Poya day like yesterday that Arhath Sangamitta Theri arrived in Sri Lanka from India more than two millennia ago, carrying a Bo sapling, which today stands in Anuradhapura as the oldest historical tree in the world and a sacred symbol of Buddhists. To coincide with this event, the Indian High Commission hosted the 11th edition of India’s Rich Buddhist Heritage Exhibition at the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi precincts in Anuradhapura. The Indian Embassy’s media and cultural secretary, Navya Singla, is seen here presenting a painting depicting the Sangamitta Theri arrival to the Atamasthanadipathi Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayake Thera. Next week, President Anura Kumara Disanayake visits Buddha Gaya where the sacred tree under which the Buddha attained Enlightenment is venerated. Pic by B.G.
