Pilgrims in god’s hands
Seenigama Maha Devalaya, a sacred site revered by people from several ethnic groups across Sri Lanka, is located near the Devol Devalaya, also known as the Diyamba Devol Devalaya.
The site draws a large number of devotees who seek spiritual blessings. Pilgrims who come to worship at the Seenigama Maha Devalaya often make their way to the nearby Devol Devalaya.
However, the journey to the Devol Devalaya, located over 400 metres from the main temple, is dangerous as pilgrims must cross the open sea by boat, with no safety measures in place.
Historically, the Devol Devalaya was situated closer to the Seenigama Maha Devalaya, but due to coastal erosion over time, it has gradually shifted.
Pilgrims travelling to the Devol Devalaya pay a fee to board a boat at the shore, which ferries them across the water to their destination and brings them back afterwards.
The boat operators responsible for transporting the pilgrims, do so with little regard for the safety of their passengers. The boats lack basic safety precautions such as life jackets, endangering travellers.
The authorities responsible for ensuring safety have remained silent, possibly out of concern for offending religious sensitivities. This has led to growing concerns among observers, who wonder if the situation is being overlooked to avoid disturbing religious practices.
Moreover, visitors seem unconcerned about the dangers they face, raising serious concerns that a tragedy could occur in the future.
