Shortest-serving Speaker quits, new Speaker on Tuesday
View(s):A new Speaker will be announced on Tuesday following the resignation of the recently elected Speaker, Asoka Ranwala. His resignation follows criticism regarding the authenticity of his educational qualifications.
The Secretary to the President officially informed the Secretary General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera in writing, that the President had accepted the resignation of the Speaker.
Mr Ranwala on Friday informed the President in writing of his decision to step down from the position.
In accordance with Article 64(2) of the Constitution, any Member holding the office of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, or Deputy Chairman of a Committee must notify the President in writing when resigning from their position.
This marks the end of Mr Ranwala’s brief tenure, with his resignation coming just 22 days after he assumed office. He now holds the record for serving the shortest period as Speaker in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary history.
Mr Ranwala, however has said that he has not made any false statement and that he would obtain the necessary certificates and produce them later.
