Superior courts vacancies to be filled soon

Six Superior Court vacancies—four in the Supreme Court and two in the Court of Appeal—are due to be filled shortly, the Sunday Times learns.
Justices Sobitha Rajakaruna, Menaka Wijesundara, Mohammed Laffar, and Sampath B. Abeykoon are the most senior justices in the Court of Appeal.
The Sunday Times learns that the Supreme Court vacancies are to be filled considering names from the Court of Appeal, the Attorney General’s Department, and the Unofficial Bar.
Earlier, the current Justice Ministry Secretary, Ayesha Jinasena, was recommended by the Attorney General while she was serving as the Solicitor General.
However, the name could not be considered as the Supreme Court had issued an interim order on the then President on filling the vacancies to the superior courts.
High Court judges Sarath Dissanayake and Pradeep Hettiaarachchi are currently the most senior judges in the High Courts.
Senior Deputy Solicitor General Lakmali Karunanayake’s name too has been recommended by the Attorney General for the vacancy in the Court of Appeal.
The vacancy in the Supreme Court first occurred after the retirement of Justice Buweneka Aluwihare in November last year. Thereafter Justices Priyantha Jayawardena (March), Vijith Malalgoda (August) and Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya (December) retired.
