The St Mary’s Choral Group which originated over 50 years ago will present a novel programme of Christmas Carols and readings from the Old and New Testament of the Bible together with excerpts and poems from modern Christian writers at St Mary’s Church, Bambalapitiya on Saturday, December 21.

The programme is titled “Christ Chose a Manger” and will revolve around the four Advent candles with meaningful readings, poems and carols in between emphasising the relevance of each candle.

The programme will begin with a Christmas Organ Fantasia   by Neomal de Alwis on the majestic Johannus 370 together with Sithum Palihawardena on trumpet.

Apart from the perennially favourite carols for congregational singing, the Choir will render a variety of carols and Christmas music from Bach, Verdi, Handel, Berlioz as well as Basque compositions and contemporary carols by Brad Nix, Chris Eaton and Amy Grant.

An ensemble of accomplished musicians will support the choir – Hasinee Andree and Himath Samarakoon (violin), Manoj Wijewardena (viola), Rochana Ramanayake (cello), Minuka Jayawardena (oboe), Pavithran Francis (clarinet), and Sithum Palihawardena (trumpet).

The choir will be conducted by Geoffrey Alagaratnam, Stefan Corera, Michele Fonseka, Rajeev Aloysius, Jehan Bastians, and young Treshan Motha who will lead them for the different renditions.

‘Christ Chose a Manger’ is on Saturday, December 21 at 7.15 p.m (immediately after the 6.15 pm evening mass) at St Mary’s Bambalapitiya.       All are welcome.
