Digitalisation to revolutionise the company secretarial game
Having gotten into company secretarial work through legacy, and family pressure, Isura Sirisena is ready to revolutionise the industry.
The second-generation head of Ananda Sirisena and Company, one of the pioneering Company Secretarial Firms in Sri Lanka, Mr. Sirisena had always had a ‘slant’ towards entrepreneurship.
“Getting into the company was a turning point,” he says settling in for a chat with The Sunday Times Business on a crisp Thursday morning in Colombo. “I was pushed into the family business as most of my family members are company secretaries. So, getting into the business was mostly family pressure. When I was working with my father, I sort of realised that the business can be turned around through digitalisation and streamlined more for customer convenience,” he said. Also, most law firms in Sri Lanka do not have such a digitisation at that time. Mr. Sirisena for a while had been interacting with foreign clientele and trying to bring that business into the company. “I also interacted with other foreign company secretaries and focused on foreign clientele.” The idea to provide quality management and service to the clients was one of the reasons to put everything into a mobile app and another reason to be a fully-fledged digital organisation, he explained.
The app became a more viable business model during the pandemic, Mr. Sirisena added. He noted that the app helped grow the business. It is free of charge to clients, he said, noting that the Australian clients love this app.
Amongst the many options available in the app, Mr. Sirisena said that sometimes Sri Lankan banks and other such institutions require physical documentation, and the clients can request such documents to be delivered to the designated address through the app.
This is how he became the Founder of “The Boardroom”, a revolutionary app that allows companies to store documentation in one place. He successfully branched out the business to Australia as well and now successfully runs incorporation services for both countries.
“Now we are promoting our clients to have a virtual company secretary. Instead of clients coming into my office, they can access all their documentation etc. through the app.”
Interestingly, most of his staff are remotely working, he said, noting that two staff are based in Polonnaruwa. “We are trying to hire more people to work remotely,” he added.
Laying down his long-term plans, Mr. Sirisena said that he wants to operate as a virtual company secretary and to be at the fingertips of clients. “We want to be able to make clients time efficient by taking on the mundane tasks such as delivering documentation and arranging resources etc,” he explained. He also pointed out that the Boardroom app helps solopreneurs (individuals who runs a business by themselves, without any employees or partners) so that they can grow their business without additional costs and headaches.
Mr. Sirisena’s company, a well-known among the expatriate community in Australia, is hoping to launch several other technologically driven services in Sri Lanka and Australia as well.
