Ports Authority MD appointment in a fix
Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is embroiled in a legal battle over the newly appointed Managing Director (MD) after removing the previous officer.
Sources at the SLPA told The Sunday Times Business that the new Ports Minister Bimal Rathnayaka is said to have removed the previous MD Prabhath Malavige and appointed a junior officer Janaka Hemachandra, an engineer with around 20 years of service at the SLPA.
It is learnt that there are currently three Additional MDs, nine Directors and 10 Heads of Divisions more senior to the newly-appointed MD. Mr. Malavige is said to have filed a legal action against his removal which is to be taken up next on January 16 when the hearing is likely to conclude.
Meanwhile, the Association of Executive Officers that forms all executive officers at the port except engineers and doctors with a membership of around 300 has filed a Fundamental Rights case in October after the removal of Rs. Malavige. This case is said to be fixed for February.
Sources at the SLPA noted that since 1979 – 1984 the position of General Manager has today become the Managing Director’s office.
With the removal of the previous MD, Mr. Malavige it is learnt that since he has no other position to hold has had to leave office and retire.
