Allowance for schoolchildren from next month: Deputy minister

Around 250,000 students belonging to families that are beneficiaries of the Aswesuma programme will be given a monthly allowance of Rs 6,000 for their educational activities starting next month, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said.

He said that Rs 6,500 million has been allocated for the programme which begins in January 2025.

Plans are also afoot to extend this programme to children who are either orphans or living in homes due to various reasons and need financial assistance to complete their education.

Grama Sevaka Niladaris have been entrusted with the task of carrying out a survey on the different categories of children who may need the additional money, the Deputy Minister said.
