The Government will embark on a major overhaul of the country’s teacher training programme shortly to enhance the use of digital technology in the sector.

The programme which will commence with a grant from the People’s Republic of China will see the amalgamation of the 19 teacher training colleges in the country into a digital network with the aim of transforming the colleges to a degree awarding university.

The Sri Lanka University of Education (SLUE) is aimed at creating an advanced institution dedicated to producing world-class educators who can drive the furtive of education.

“The key objective of SLUE is to build a Smart University that aligns with the nation’s broader goals of digital transformation in the general education sector, equipping future teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead the transformation,” a paper prepared by the Education Ministry on the subject said.

The digital enhancement of the education sector through the Smart University solution will have far reaching implications for both the economy and society by equipping teachers with digital skills and fostering an innovative educational environment, the paper said.

The programme will be implemented in phases starting with a pilot phase to test critical systems like the Learning Management System (LMS) and smart classroom on a smaller scale.

The first phase, or first year, will focus on establishing foundational infrastructure, including high speed SD-WAN connectivity across all campuses and setting up of smart classrooms with distance learning capabilities. Phase two will see the expansion of smart classrooms and the centralised distance learning platforms, along with full Wi-Fi coverage across all campuses with phase three and four focusing on expansion of the systems to include biometric access systems, alongside AI driven education tools of personalised learning and analytics.

Phases four and five will focus on continuous innovation with global collaboration to ensure that SLUE remains a leader in digital education.
