A new special crime investigation division is to be set up at provincial level to minimise crime in the provinces.

The nine police divisions – one for each province, will be modelled along the lines of the Colombo Crime Division and will be tasked with probing grave crimes and conducting special investigations at provincial level, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told the Sunday Times. The minister said he intends to submit a Cabinet Paper proposing the creation of these police divisions next week.

All nine provincial police divisions will be under the supervision of a Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The Inspector General of Police (IGP) will be in overall charge of the divisions.

The divisions will primarily focus on solving unsolved cases, cracking down on organised crime, combatting drug trafficking and other grave crimes. They will also investigate certain crimes that might be more prevalent in some provinces, such as human smuggling.

Each division will also have its own hotline, where people can provide anonymous tips, the minister added.

The new unit will be operational from January.
