Sri Lankans told to exercise their power on electricity charges
View(s):Views on what Sri Lankans will have to pay, or not pay, for electricity in the first half of next year will be heard until early January, the regulator said.
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced public consultations on both the proposed electricity tariff revision and the counterproposal by the PUCSL for January-June 2025. The consultations, which began on Tuesday (17), will continue until January 8.
Sri Lankans are being invited to give feedback through multiple channels.
Monthly charges were revised in August 2022, the first time since November 2014. More than half of the users, or 3.4 million, are those in the 31-60 units category.
The counterproposal of PUCSL was formulated after reviewing multiple factors, including the initial tariff proped by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s report on fuel costs for electricity generation, and other considerations, said Jayanath Herath, director of corporate communications at the PUCSL.
The PUCSL announced that written opinions and suggestions will be accepted until January 8. Oral feedback will be gathered through nine provincial-level sessions. Written submissions can be emailed to info@pucsl.gov.lk, sent via WhatsApp to 076 427 10 30, or submitted by post to the PUCSL.
The provincial-level public consultation and oral presentations are scheduled as follows: the Central Province session will be held at the District Secretariat Auditorium in Kandy on December 27, while the Uva Province session will be at the District Secretariat Auditorium in Monaragala on December. The Sabaragamuwa Province session is set for January 3 at the District Secretariat Auditorium in Ratnapura, and the Southern Province session will be on January 4 at the District Secretariat Auditorium in Matara.
On the same day, the North Western Province session will be held at the North Western Provincial Council’s Lichchavi Ward in Kurunegala. The North Central Province session is scheduled for January 5, 2025 at the District Secretariat Auditorium in Anuradhapura, followed by the Northern Province session at the District Secretariat Auditorium in Jaffna on January 6. The Eastern Province session will take place at the District Secretariat Auditorium in Ampara on January 8, and the Western Province session is planned for January 10 at the BMICH, Colombo.
To register for the public consultations, or to provide oral feedback, participants can contact the designated numbers assigned for their province. For the Central, Northern, and Eastern Provinces, the contact number is 077 039 9119.
Those in the North-Western, Northern, Central, and Western Provinces can reach out via 076 427 1030, while participants from the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva Provinces can call 076 322 4610.
The final decision will be announced on January 17, following a review of the feedback and suggestions from the consultations, Mr. Herath said.
Meanwhile, the CEB has recommended retaining the prevailing electricity tariffs for the first half of 2025.
