Tri-forces personnel protection withdrawn from ex-presidents
View(s):Tri-forces personnel assigned for the protection of former Presidents are due to be removed effective from tomorrow (23).
The government’s decision to remove tri-forces personnel assigned for the protection of ex-presidents was announced by Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala in Parliament on Tuesday (17). The minister said that more than Rs. 1.4 billion in taxpayer funds had been spent to provide security for former presidents over the past 11 1/2 months alone. He claimed the government would be able to save at least Rs. 1.2 billion a year by implementing the new security plan.
Police personnel will continue to provide security for the ex-presidents. The security of former presidents will be reviewed every six months and protection will be allocated accordingly, Minister Wijepala told Parliament.
Ministry of Defence (MOD) Spokesman Colonel Nalin Herath confirmed yesterday that tri-forces personnel assigned to the ex-presidents will be removed effective December 23. Though tri-forces personnel will be removed the security of the ex-presidents will not be compromised at any cost and the Ministry of Public Security would ensure their security, Col. Herath emphasised.
