A reflection on my journey at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI)
View(s):I am Theshani Weligamage, a graduate of LLB from the University of Colombo and International Relations from the University of London, currently serving as a Visiting Lecturer at the Royal Institute of Colombo. As an enthusiast of International Relations, I sought a platform to deepen my understanding of diplomacy and international affairs, which led me to enroll in the Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs at BIDTI. This transformative experience culminated in earning a distinction and receiving the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Award for the Most Outstanding Performance of the 25th Batch at the Convocation held in July 2024.
I was drawn to the course due to BIDTI’s renowned reputation for excellence and the quality of its programmes. The Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs proved to be a multifaceted curriculum, offering an extensive range of topics in International Relations and Diplomacy. The programme seamlessly blended theoretical insights with practical applications, featuring thought-provoking seminars and lectures delivered by expert academics and practitioners from diverse fields, including ministries, international organizations, and academic institutions. This exposure provided invaluable opportunities to engage with experts across a broad spectrum of disciplines.
Classroom interactions at BIDTI were intellectually stimulating and encouraged critical thinking. Students participated in discussions that often required stepping beyond conventional perspectives. The engaging environment fostered a continuous exchange of ideas, ensuring that learning was both interactive and enriching.
The curriculum was meticulously designed to produce competent, well-rounded students capable of navigating the dynamic landscape of International Relations and Diplomacy. From foundational concepts in International Relations to topics such as international law, international organizations, regional and area studies, Sri Lankan history, politics, and contemporary global challenges, the programme was both comprehensive and rigorous. Students were inspired to think analytically and delve deeper into the subject matter. Additionally, special guest lectures on various themes, often accessible to the public, enhanced our exposure to current issues in foreign affairs.
Exams and assessments complemented each module, ranging from take-home assignments and viva examinations to group presentations and practical exercises like negotiations and media interviews. These assessments went beyond theoretical knowledge, enabling students to apply their understanding in realistic scenarios. Among the many engaging assignments, I particularly recall the multilateral negotiation exercises and mock media interviews, which I thoroughly enjoyed. These experiences were instrumental in evaluating our progress, identifying areas for improvement, and fostering practical skills.
The classroom was an environment which encouraged peer learning. Collaborative activities and group assignments allowed us to learn from one another, work as a team, and collectively support each other’s growth. The diverse backgrounds of the student cohort, ranging from undergraduates, legal professionals, and tri-forces personnel to doctors, engineers, public servants, and representatives of various organizations enriched our classroom discussions with a wide array of perspectives and ideas.
Reflecting on my journey at BIDTI, I can confidently say that the programme significantly enhanced my understanding of International Relations and Diplomacy. It has provided me with a nuanced perspective on these fields and deepened my enthusiasm for the subject. The knowledge and skills I gained continue to benefit me in my professional career, making this experience far more valuable than a mere academic qualification.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Director-General of BIDTI, the dedicated staff members, and the expert resource personnel from national and international organizations. Their unwavering commitment to excellence and their guidance made our learning journey truly remarkable. Their collective efforts ensured that every student benefited from a holistic and rewarding educational experience.
To those considering advancing their knowledge in International Relations and Diplomacy, I wholeheartedly recommend BIDTI. Regardless of your professional background, this qualification offers immense value. BIDTI’s curriculum evolves to address contemporary topics in foreign affairs, ensuring participants remain well-informed on current global trends. I am confident that enrolling at BIDTI will be an investment and that contributes to a profoundly positive learning experience.
I wish BIDTI continued success in its mission to cultivate excellence in the field of diplomacy and international affairs.
