British HC visits Kelaniya University
View(s):British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Andrew Patrick recently visited the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya on the invitation of its Dean Prof Madawa Chandratilake.
The event was graced by the Director of Global Health Research Unit for diabetes and cardiovascular disease among South Asians (GHRU), Prof John Chambers. Also present were collaborative researchers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Singapore and the UK.
Dr Supun Withana and Dr Maithree Rupasinghe from the Department of Family Medicine and Dr Dilini Vipulaguna from the Ayathi Centre, who were also members of two other National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) projects, presented their research findings at the event.
The primary purpose of the visit was to engage with long term research collaborators that worked with the Faculty under the prestigious NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) UK grant schemes.
Within the span of a decade, the Faculty has conducted collaborative research that was funded by the NIHR with the intention of creating impactful research that would positively contribute towards health policy and practice.
During the visit, the High Commissioner toured the Colombo North Centre for Liver Disease (CNCLD) and the Ayathi Centre for Children with Disability and expressed his deep appreciation for the work done at these specialised centres together with the Faculty’s service in community wellbeing.
He emphasised his willingness to support further research collaboration between the UK and Sri Lanka, highlighting the potential of enhancing partnerships as well as advancing shared goals in health care and education.
High Commissioner Patrick also had discussions with students from the Medical Speech and Hearing Sciences and Occupational Therapy programmes.
He helped the students by donating 8 books to improve language skills and the humanities aspect of health which mainly includes soft skills like communication and humility.
