Education Ministry releases 2025 school calendar

The Education Ministry has announced the school calendar for 2025 with the second stage of the third term for the 2024 academic year in all government and government-approved private schools and piriven commencing on January 2.

The term will run for three weeks and will conclude on January 24.

The first phase of the first term for 2025 will commence on Monday, January 27 and end on Friday, March 14. The first term vacation will start on March 15 and end on March 31. The second phase of schooling will commence on Tuesday, April 1, and end on Friday, April 11. The second term vacation will commence on April 12 and end on April 20.

The third phase of the school term will commence on Monday, April 21 and end on Friday May 9. Vacation will be granted from May 10 to 13.

The second term will commence on Wednesday, May 14, and continue till Tuesday August 7. Vacation will be from August 8 to 17.

The first phase of the third term will commence on August 18 to Friday, October 17 with a vacation from October 18 to November 16.

The second phase of the third term will commence on Monday, November 17 and continue till Friday, December 19.

If Provincial Ministries of Education think that they need to make changes in the school calendar in accordance with circumstances identical to their respective provinces, this calendar may be amended in compliance with the related circulars, the Education Ministry said.

As per circular 97/15 of August, 1997, all schools in Sri Lanka should hold 210 days of school a year. However, according to the public holidays of 2025 and as the school year starts on 27 January, 2025, it will be impossible to conduct classes in school for the required 210 days. Consequently for 2025, all government and government approved private schools and approved piriven should conduct classes for 181 days, the Education Ministry said.
