Education sector changes following Cabinet approval: Deputy Minister
View(s):The government is to introduce several major changes to the education sector in 2025.
Four circulars are to be issued next year in relation to these changes, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne told Education Times. As part of the changes, the government plans to replace the existing module system for teachers with a new “updated system” by mid-2025, he revealed.
The government will also be introducing a more streamlined teacher transfer system. Deputy Minister Seneviratne said the existing transfer system has been beset by several problems and needed to be regulate better. He noted that there have been instances where teachers who have obtained transfers to one school were suddenly placed at a different school by the Zonal Education Office at the last minute as per its own preference. The Council will make sure that the placement is fixed and won’t change at the last minute, he stressed.
Another change the government hopes to make is issue a circular that will rectify the salary anomalies in the education sector.
The fourth major change will be in relation to the admittance of students to intermediate classes in government schools. “We will issue a new circular with new regulations. As per the circular, the principal will publicly advertise the vacancies in their schools and parents can apply for those vacancies,” the deputy minister said. He added that neither the Education Ministry nor any other official will interfere in the admission process, with the school principal being given full powers to admit children to intermediate classes at their respective schools.
All the above changes in the education sector will be implemented following Cabinet approval, Deputy Minister Seneviratne emphasised. (DW)
