Project “Waste to Worth” Drives Awareness on Waste Management
View(s):Poverty and Hunger Avenue of Leo Club of the University of Kelaniya successfully concluded the Composting Awareness Session on December 17th at Agriculture Channelling Centre, Kelaniya in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture. This session marked the final stage of the second phase of the project “Waste to Worth”.
The session aimed to promote sustainable waste management and gardening practices by educating participants on proper composting techniques. Attendees learned methods for creating compost and key gardening techniques.
This valuable session was conducted by Mrs. Udari, an officer from the Department of Agriculture.
A separate session on sanitary landfills was conducted by a club member, who shared details gathered from a field visit to the Green Park Sanitary Landfill. Videos recorded during the visit were shown to participants, offering a visual and practical understanding of how sanitary landfills operate and their importance in waste management.
Leaflets containing detailed information on composting, biogas, and sanitary landfill concepts were distributed to enhance community knowledge. Moreover, seeds and compost bins were distributed to encourage the practical application of the knowledge shared during the session.
Project “Waste to Worth” aims to educate the public on the environmental impacts of e-waste, and promote sustainable waste management through the 3R principles. It also engages communities in creative recycling efforts to support sustainable waste disposal. As part of this project, initiatives such as an advertisement campaign, eco-bag distribution, and a school awareness session highlighted the project’s dedication to sustainable living and environmental responsibility.
