Anura Meddegoda to contest for BASL presidency
View(s):President’s Counsel Anura Meddegoda has announced his candidacy for the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) for the 2025/2026 term.
Mr. Meddegoda is the current President of BASL and was appointed to the post following the resignation of former BASL President Kaushalya Nawaratne.
In announcing his candidacy, Mr. Meddegoda, PC said that he decided to contest for the BASL presidency considering the numerous requests from both senior and junior members of the Bar including many President’s Counsel.
“During the course of my professional career, and particularly in the last 20 years, I have dedicated myself to advocate for the rights of members of the Bar, safeguarding the core principles of our profession, and standing firmly for the independence and integrity of the Bar. This period has reaffirmed my belief that the BASL deserves leadership that prioritizes the profession and its members above all else,” he added.
Mr. Meddegoda has over 40 years active practice in the legal profession, and is still active in legal practice, both in Colombo and the provinces. He has previously served in the Attorney General’s Department as a State Counsel and Senior State Counsel. He was also Prosecuting Counsel at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague.
He previously served as Deputy President of BASL alongside Saliya Pieris, PC.
